Hill House with Rennie MacIntosh Designs

In Helensburgh, Scotland, you'll find the beautoful Hill House, created by architects and designers Charles and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. The house is an example of the Modern Style, and was designed and built in 1902-04 for Publisher Walter Blackie and his wife and children. Mackintosh also designed the house furniture and fittings and entire interior. After a tour of this lovely home, be sure to walk the ramps that take you over the roof of the house, and enjoy a nice afternoon in their tearoom.

Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle is the ancesteral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell, and an iconic attraction on the West Coast of Scotland. If you've never seen inside this castle, stop what you're planning and go take a tour...you'll be amazed...especially by the weapons room and the dedication to British forces "drum room." There's a lovely cafe, and if you are a veteran or military, you can tour the castle for free just by showing an ID! The Campbells still live in part of the castle, so be sure to wave towards their windows, and maybe you'll get a wave back.

Inveraray Town

As you approach this very unique town from across the Loch, you're going to notice that all the buildings are just one colour - white. It's quite scenic from a distance, and up close. And on approach, you can't miss the iconic fairytale looking castle, home to the Campbell Clan. There's lovely gift shops with original Scottish flare, many things made by nearby local artisans. The fish-n-chip shop is nice, and always a dram of whiskey can be found in Scotland's oldest pub - The George. They serve a nice meal as well.

Rosneath Peninsula

This is a must see area. Head out of Arrochar village towards the south and drive nine miles on what we fondly call....the Whoop-te-doo road. You'll know why when you drive this rollercoaster like narrow twisting and turning lane along Loch Long. When you get to the roundabout, you can either head straight down to the head of Gare Loch, or you can turn right and go towards Ardpeaton then Cove then Kilcreggan and onwards along the Shore Road. The beaches are well worth a stop and walk. Hunt for Victorian pottery and seaglass as you take your stroll...there's plenty to be found. Stop at Scotland's Cove Country store for gelato and coffee, vegan options, gifts and souvenirs, and fresh fruits and veges.

Stirling Castle

This was the home of Mary, Queen of Scots herself until age five, when the English Queen Elizabeth tried to have her poisoned. So, off to France she was sent to eventually marry the French Prince so that Scotland could form an alliance against England. Her mother, Mary DeGuise remained at Stirling Castle. Everything has been recreated beautifully after much destruction was done to the castle through a series of wars. Many of the castle's guides are former Paras and Royal Marines.

The Olive Branch

We should all be so lucky to be extended an Olive Branch, and we can be, because this dainty cafe is right in Arrochar Village. Run down a fill up your auto with some fuel at the local petrol station, and sitting right next door to that is The Olive Branch. The owners also happen to have two paintings hanging high on the wall which were painted by the original owners of Fascadail House itself. A Father and his son, who became quite a popular artist of his time. If you'd like a nice sandwich, a lovely burger, coffee or flapjack...check out The Olive Branch!

Falls of Falloch

Wow...that's the only way to describe these lovely falls. The walk to the main falls is easy on the feet and so worth the short trek. You'll want to stay for a while and just take in the sights, sounds and mere beauty of the place. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy.

There's a free and a paid part of the trail - perfect for children. As adults, you'll thoroughly enjoy hunting out the trolls, the little faeries and their homes, plus many other delightful surprises in the woods. Starting point is in Luss by the large carved stump outside the General Store. Good luck, and don't get whisked away by the faeries!

Watchmesee

This is an amazing blog written by a girl named Kathi Kamleitner, and she adds "This post would not have been possible without the help of two absolute experts – Ksenia Zizina from For All Things Creative and Erin Doogan from Beauty Creep. Both know the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park really well and shared many of their favourite places to visit in my Instagram Live series #WildForScotland. Watch our conversations here!" Take a read before you check in to Fascadail Country House and you'll truly get an idea of some "must see" places. We've been to many on this list of 40, but not all of them, so Stuart and I still have a few places to see in our own back yard! Click on the link below!

Arrochar Alps and Crianlarich

Heading north towards Tarbet, Loch Lomond narrows and becomes enclosed by increasingly imposing mountains - that's the beginning of the Highlands. The Arrochar Alps, around the head of Loch Long and to the west side of Ben Lomond, are a group of very steep and rocky mountains with unique character. One of them, "The Cobbler" - has a distinctive outline at its peak, which is how it got its name. Fascadail Country Guest House has a perfectly centered view of its peak.
